Your Questions Answered pt 1

Wow – you all asked a lot of great questions this time around! Let’s get to it…

Mandy asked…

When you were potty training your boys, did you use a ring on the regular toilet, or miniature potty seats? And if so, did you have three potties?

We started out using a toilet ring and then a couple of weeks into it we started sitting them on the toilet, without the ring, backwards. Yep, backwards. I’d read or heard somewhere that backwards can be a good way for small kids to use public toilets without feeling like they’re going to fall in. We figured if we “practiced” doing that at home a few times a week than the boys wouldn’t freak out in public. Pretty soon though the boys preferred sitting that way, so we just put the potty ring away.

Annie asked the following questions…

I love Lily’s name!! Were there any “runner” ups?

Well, I can tell you what my #1 choice had been and what Nick’s #1 choice had been… I liked Molly and he liked Brittany. Neither of us liked the others choice though, so it was back to the drawing board… or iPad in this case! Nick downloaded a baby name app and we used it to look up names. We both seemed drawn to names ending in “y” so we just searched girl names ending in y until we found one we both liked.
What type of camera do you have?

I have a Nikon D3000. It’s a bottom of the line DSLR, but I clearly love it. About a year ago I bought a second lens (35mm) and that pretty much hasn’t left my camera since I got it last May. I would love to upgrade someday, but for now this camera is serving me well.

Do you have any siblings?

I do! I have a brother who is 2 years younger than me and a sister (the famous Aunt Laura) who is 3.5 years younger than me. Yep. I suffer from oldest child syndrome. Ha!

Jenna asked the following…

How do you manage with four kids under four to put them all to sleep and still get a good nights rest?! You’re amazing!

Ha! You’re funny Jenna, thinking I get a good nights rest. 😉 Honestly I have a much easier time getting the boys into bed and asleep than Nick does. The boys have far too much fun with him and he’s willing to play along. I, on the other hand, mean business when I say it’s bed time, so what takes me about 5 minutes to do (tucking in, hugs, prayers, etc) can take Nick 15 or 20 some nights. I think it also helps that the boys get a star on their star charts for staying in bed each night. Lily has seriously disrupted my beauty sleep, but that’s ok. I know it’s only for a short time. Last night in fact, she did awesome! I went to bed at 10:30 and she didn’t wake up to eat until 3:30 and then again not until almost 8 this morning! Ahhhhhh.

And now a bunch of questions from Brenda…

What are the biggest challenges with this single birth, compared to when the boys were infants?

I’d say the biggest challenge has been having kids of different ages and stages in the house. When the boys were babies they all were on the same schedule, they needed the same things, I didn’t have to worry about someone older trampling them, etc. Actually, as I answered that I realized something equally challenging – no schedule this time around! Oh how I miss the lovely eating schedule the NICU had put the boys on. Planning outings and planning the day is so much easier when you know what time you’ll be feeding the baby. I miss that and may see if I can get Lily on one in the next couple of weeks.

What are you enjoying most (aside from the moments when Lily naps lol) with this newborn experience?

I love mornings like today, when the boys are out of the house and it’s just Lily and me here. I feel like it gives me a glimpse into what other mom’s experience when they have their first child. It’s wonderful! I’m really getting to focus on her and see her little personality instead of worrying about two more babies crying, wanting to be fed, wanting to be changed, etc.

Is there any chance of a 5th?

Well, technically there’s always a chance, but it certainly wouldn’t be our doing considering I had my tubes tied. Who knows though – adoption is always an option and something Nick and I have always thought we would do. I think that would be way, way down the road though.

Has there been any sort of “sibling rivalry/jealousy” at this point?

The closest we’ve come I think is how annoyed the boys were the other day when Lily wouldn’t sleep. I kept having to brush them off because I was trying so hard to put her down. By the time lunch was 30 minutes late the boys were pretty irritated, I could tell.

How long did the generous dinner donations last at your house?

I had 3 meals a week delivered right up until the day before my parents flew in, so about a month. It was awesome! Sure made it hard to get back into the habit of planning and cooking all the meals…

What’s the best baby gadget you have this time around?

Hmmmm… the only new thing I have gadget wise is the sound machine I bought a couple of days ago. So far I’m liking it!

What’s been the biggest surprise with this latest family addition?

How much more vocal she is than the boys! I think we’ve got a drama queen on our hands 😉

Speaking of drama, the little lady is calling! Part two will go up tomorrow!
