It’s been a while since I answered the Question of the Week over at Multiples and More, but today’s question was just too fun to pass up… Actually, I think it was the opportunity to dig up an old photo that was too fun to pass up!
Just yesterday, it dawned on me that Nick and I have been together for 11 years this month. In fact, we “officially” became boyfriend and girlfriend on February 15, 2000. We hung out all day on the 14th and Nick couldn’t get up the courage to ask me until about 2am on the 15th! Silly boy 🙂 Let me back up though…
Nick and I both attended Messiah College, in Pennsylvania (just south of Harrisburg). During my freshman year (’99/’00) Nick was in his sophomore year. My very first college class was an 8am class (I foolishly thought it would be smart to get all my classes out of the way in the morning) on Public Communication. Turns out Nick was in that very same class with me!
Mid-way through that first semester, I stopped in to say hi to some friends on my floor (sophomore girls who were, and still are, awesome!) and recognized the guy who was visiting them. We both quickly realized we were in the same class and Nick said “I’m going to sit by you now so I can bug you”.
This particular professor let us take our mid-terms and finals with a partner, and seeing as Nick and I kind of knew each other (but no one else in the class) we decided to team up. We, of course, rocked our tests! We had fun hanging out together once in a while that semester, but never saw each other as more than friends. It never once crossed my mind that we could end up romantically linked one day.
During Christmas break we chatted on instant messenger if we happened to be on at the same time, and still we were simply friends. Shortly after getting back to school though, something changed. I’m not sure when or how, but suddenly I was attracted to Nick and I was pretty sure he felt the same way about me. For the next month we danced around the issue, hinting and flirting until we finally began dating.
That’s us, 11 years ago! My how time flies… feels like just yesterday I was 18 and he was 19. Wait a minute. No it doesn’t. Kids have aged us! 18 seems forever ago! (The bears were his idea, by the way.)
As we dated (and even since getting married), we found fun little facts that linked us. One of Nick’s grandmothers used to live in the very same small Maine town I grew up in. Nick would visit her in the summer when he was a kid. We could have been at the beach at the same time! Or I could have ridden past him on my bike! Or how about this one – Nick’s mom was in a wedding that my parents attended. This was obviously before Nick and I were born, but still! I know there were other fun facts, but I’m totally blanking on them right now.
We had been dating for a year and a half when Nick suddenly broke up with me. Know that opening scene in Legally Blonde where Elle (and all her friends) think she’s getting engaged that night and instead she gets dumped at a nice restaurant? That was me, except I was dumped in the parking lot of a Burger King. I was devastated. Friends were shocked. It was rough.
Bottom line, Nick wasn’t ready to get married and he knew I was. He went off to Michigan to start his first job out of college and I moved back home with my parents to figure out what to do next.
A couple of months later we started talking on the phone once in a while. That turned into several times a week. That turned into me flying out to Detroit to visit. We had a long talk that weekend and began dating again. Less than two months later, Nick proposed. On the phone! About 6 weeks later he flew home to Vermont and I drove over from Maine to see him, where he surprised me with my ring.
About 4 months after we got engaged we were married, and the rest is history!
I love my Valentine 🙂
