Burning Questions

Life is filled with questions. Some of them are deep, some of them are dumb. I ask myself lots of questions on a daily basis. Sometimes I ask them out loud and appear crazy because I’m the only one in the room and sometimes I ask them and Nick looks at me like I’m crazy for asking.

Yesterday’s questions included, why are my boys so obsessed with sitting in Lily’s chair?

And, why is my baby suddenly not sleeping?

On Saturday Lily was awake from 3pm until shortly after 11pm. Yep. 8 hours straight for a 6 week old. Nick and I agreed that was an extremely frustrating evening! Lily was beyond overtired and not at all happy about it. We tried every trick we knew to get her to sleep and stay asleep. Yesterday she was at it again, but at the 4 hour mark I started asking internet friends for their best tips… one suggested the vacuum! Of course! Lily was always mellow when one of us was vacuuming, but I’d never run it long enough to put her to sleep.

Yep. I parked the vacuum next to her yesterday afternoon and let it run for 30 minutes. Know what? It kept her calm and put her to sleep! Woohoo! I’ll be investing in a sound machine today. (I tried a radio set to static in her room last night and wanted to pull my hair out at the annoying sound.)

And finally, how on earth does she make her eyes so big?!

So what are your burning questions?

Let’s do another Q&A! We haven’t done one since June, so I figure it’s about time. Leave your question(s) in the comments section of this post and I’ll answer ’em later this week. Off limits are: middle names and exact city we live in (I just give the general “Kansas City” answer).

After you’ve left your question, pop on over to my friend Sarah’s blog and enter to win a treat from my Etsy shop! The giveaway ends later this week and so far the number of entries is extremely low, so your chance of winning is good!

  • Can’t resist the opportunity to pick your brain, Helen! 🙂

When you were potty training your boys, did you use a ring on the regular toilet, or miniature potty seats? And if so, did you have three potties?

We’re just beginning to introduce the toilet to the girls (26 months old), and I had intended to use the ring on the regular toilet. But…if one wants to go, the other very quickly decides she “needs” to go, too. I certainly don’t want to turn this into a game, but I don’t know if it will be fair of me to ask the second child to wait until her sister finishes…and I can only imagine it’s hard for Sister #1 to “relax” when her sis is SCREAMING in the other room.

    Thanks so much!ReplyCancel

  • might make you go crazy like the static, but worth a try. You can try white, pink or brown noise and they also have volume oscillation. Our little guy came home from the NICU unable to sleep without noise and we’ve been tapering him off with

Yes, the vacuum is great for getting baby to sleep, but be careful about leaving it running while “parked” as I know someone who started a fire doing that very thing.ReplyCancel

Since I have lived in the Boston area all my life, and my husband is from NH/VT, I would be to chicken to move so far away from family, although my brother moved to Colorado, and has called it home for over 20 years…Do you think you will ever move back East? Beside family, what do you & Nick miss most about living in New England? Food? Ocean? The drive from MA to Maine to VT? Sports?

I don’t know how I came across your blog, but one of the first pictures I saw of your boys they were wearing onsies, and they all had a different New England sport logo, one was wearing a Bruins, Celtic & Red Sox or maybe Patriot. I have been silent follower ever since!ReplyCancel
